  • A fun and crazy day of baseball ends in dramatic fashion at the 2015 Eastern League All-Star Classic Presented by Sullivan Tire! Festivities started around 3pm at Hadlock Stadium, home of the Portland Sea Dogs. It was an autograph seekers goldmine as players and coaches from both the East and the West team signed autographs before the game. Thousands of fans lined up waiting with anticipation until it was there time to talk to players and have their ball signed. After batting practice and plenty of autographs, an exciting homerun derby took place. A wide variety of prospects took their turns swinging for the fences, but no one thought much when Dan Gamache took his turn. Gamache of the Altoona Curve, Pittsburg Pirates Double A affiliate, had never hit more than six homeruns in his short minor league career. Gamache surprised everybody with his power as he was able to win the derby, hitting four homeruns in the final round on just nine swings.

The All-Star introductions took place around 7pm with the starters from the East walking from Sky-Box seats down the rows of fans to “Field of Dreams” music and onto the field, fans applauded and youngsters stood awe struck trying to high five the players as they went by. Red Sox catcher and Sea Dog Alumni Blake Swihart threw out the ceremonial first pitch, then proceeded to walk around the stadium shaking each fan’s hand as he passed by. He even came up and said hello to the Sullivan Tire employees who attended the event!

The East got off to an early lead as Sea Dog shortstop Marco Hernandez singled to lead the inning off and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice. The home team was able to tack on three more runs in the second inning sacrifice fly by Trenton’s Jake Cave, and a two run blast by Hernandez!

The gritty West team was able to manufacture 4 runs through a variety of timely base hits and walks to tie the game up after nine innings. To avoid straining the pitchers and risking injury in extra innings, the game was decided in a very unique tie breaker. The announcer informed a delighted crowd that the game would be decided by a home-run derby! Each team would select three players to take one swing each, and whichever team hits the most homeruns wins! If none of the three players hit a homerun it would result in a sudden death swing per swing finale, similar to a soccer shootout. It took 11 rounds, but Reading’s Brian Pointer was able to hit a walk-off home run to win the game for the East which sent his teammates and the crowd into a frenzy!
